VINTAGE GUBELIN IPSO-DAY LARGE 14KT GOLD AUTOMATIC CALENDAR EARLY 1960’s PATEK PHILIPPE QUALITY
Vintage Gubelin ‘Ipso-Day‘ large 14kt gold automatic calendar early 1960’s Patek Philippe quality
This is a rare Gubelin ‘Ipso-Day’ automatic calendar watch of wonderful quality. Manufactured in the early 1960’s or possibly the late 1950’s by one of Switzerlands finest makers, the jeweller Gubelin.
The watch is brimming with unusual and unique features. The crown is hidden in a recess and has a cut-out at the back for your finger nail to click it out and there is a quick-set pusher on the side at 8 o’clock for the date change.
The large 14kt gold case measures 35mm across, not including the crown and 42mm tip-to-tip. The watch is visually striking, with a wide bezel and substantial strap lugs.
The screw down ’nut-back’ is a sign of first class quality, fully signed by the maker ’Gubelin’ with 14kt Swiss hallmarks and individual serial number 183480.
There is also a tiny 14kt gold mark to the back of one lug.
The original two-tone silvered dial is in good order, with just a slight patina of age. Polished gold batton divisions , date window surround and dauphine hands compliment the dial perfectly.
The automatic movement is of fabulous quality, geneve striped and adjusted to two positions. The quick-set mechanism for the calendar can just be seen next to the micrometer-adjust balance.
The crown is the original 14kt gold item. the watch is in super condition, with no noticeable faults what-so-ever and just some slight scratching from mild use over the years.
Tt has never been polished or restored in any respect, though we have fitted a new quality crocodile-grain strap. Gubelin watches from this period were really quite something, approaching Patek and Vacheron for quality and some as shown here quite unique.
