VINTAGE 1958 NIVADA COMPENSAMATIC ANTARCTIC CALENDAR STAINLESS-STEEL AUTOMATIC WATCH WITH ARROW-HEAD DIAL

This is a rare original Nivada Compensamatic ’Antarctic’.

In 1957 in time for the international geophysical year, Nivada supported the us navy “operation deep freeze” they created a durable waterproof, anti-magnetic watch which they named “Antarctic”. 66 countries declared a year of science. With admiral Byrd, the watch was worn and subjected to temperature fluctuations of 100 degrees above and 40 degrees below. It was dropped, hit, snowed on, and scraped on the ice, it never missed a beat.

A testament to the ruggedness of the watch.

This example is in very, very nice condition considering the age of the watch and is the rarer ’calendar’ version. Instantly recognisable as the original 1958 model with scalloped strap lugs and arrowhead dial. Measuring 35mm across the bezel not including the crown and 43mm tip-to-tip. The case is in fine condition, with no dings or serious scratches, though there is a little fine scratching to the back from gentle use over the years, but no deep scratches or gouges where it has been opened by amateurs in the past.

The 17 jewel automatic movement is in excellent condition and the silvered dial similarly so. The original glass is still present with the magnifying bubble over the date window. A rare watch, there is much written about them on the internet and this one is in fine original condition. We have fitted this one with a new, quality alligator-grain strap.
