VINTAGE 1950’s GUBELIN IPSO MATIC CIOCCOLATONE 18KT GOLD AUTOMATIC VACHERON QUALITY ORIGINAL BOX & STRAP

Vintage 1950’s Gubelin Ipso-Matic ‘Cioccolatone’ 18kt gold automatic Vacheron quality original box & strap.

This is an exceptionally rare Gubelin Ips0-Matic ‘Cioccolatone’ automatic watch of wonderful quality. Manufactured in the early to mid 1950’s by one of Switzerland’s finest makers, the jeweller Gubelin. Visually striking and highly stylised with scalloped, down-turned lugs and stepped case curved both left and right at the bezel.

This is a very heavy and substantial watch, the large 18kt gold case measuring 32mm across, not including the crown and 45mm tip-to-tip.

The crystal itself is made from cut glass. Inside the back fully signed by the maker ’Gubelin’ with 18kt gold Swiss hallmarks and individual serial number 139115. There is also a tiny 18kt gold mark to the back of one lug and the side of the case next to the crown.

The original silvered dial is in very, very good order, with polished gold baton divisions and square facet-cut hour divisions. There is slight discolouration at the very edge to the left of the dial, very hard to notice and does not detract from it’s beauty and originality. The polished gold dauphine hands compliment the dial perfectly.

Protected by an inner case with dust cover, the automatic movement is of fabulous quality, Geneve striped and adjusted to two positions with all polished levers and screw heads. note also the micrometer-adjust balance. The crown is also the original 18kt gold item.

The watch is in outstanding original condition, never polished or restored in any respect with no noticeable faults what-so-ever. Just some very slight scratching to the back from mild use over the years. The watch came to us fitted with a brand new crocodile skin strap which looks to have been manufactured at a similar time to the watch, still has the original label present.

It then appears to have been stored away unused for the next 50 odd years, which is very unusual. The strap is a little stiff from age, but still perfectly useable we would say. Complete with the original Gubelin presentation box.

Gubelin watches from this period were really quite something, approaching Patek and Vacheron for quality and some as shown here quite exquisite.
