VINTAGE 1944 ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL SCALLOPED LUG BUBBLE BACK REF. 3801 STAINLESS STEEL & PINK GOLD ON SOLID GOLD BEADED BRACELET

Vintage 1944 Rolex Oyster Perpetual scalloped lug bubble-back ref. 3801 stainless-steel & pink gold on solid gold beaded bracelet.

Totally original condition. Never polished or restored in any way. I believe that only 76 of this reference were made and that includes all variations – all stainless-steel, steel and yellow gold, solid gold etc.

It would be reasonable to estimate that the total number of steel and pink gold models manufactured of this reference would be in single figures……unless somebody knows differently ?

Measures 29mm across the bezel not including the crown and 35.5mm to the end of each lug. Outside of the back serial numbered 299007 which correspond to a 1944 manufacturing date i believe. Inside of the back with reference number ‘3801’ which was slightly mis-stamped at the first attempt by the look of it. The inside of the back has not been defaced in any way by previous servicing marks, which is very rare to find.

Back screws down tightly as you would expect. There is no wear to the threads and no marks to the milling on the back from careless removal. It is possible that the back had never been removed from new, such is the condition and originality of the watch.

The movement is in close to ‘as-new’ condition with no loss or wear what-so-ever to the rhodium plating. Rotor swinging nicely with no wear at all at the bearing. Winds and sets perfectly as it should.

The pink gold and stainless-steel case is in good condition with no dings, dents or scrapes. Just some light scratches from gentle use over the years. Totally original and never polished or restored in any way.

The wonderful silvered dial is in close to perfect condition with subsidiary seconds and signed ‘Rolex Oyster Precision – super precision’. The original winding crown screws down tightly as it should.

The watch came to us fitted with the correct period solid 9ct gold beads of rice bracelet, hallmarked Birmingham 1941, so could quite possibly have been fitted with this from new. Also comes with a leather strap and correct period 18ct gold Rolex buckle.

The original complete Rolex ‘coffin’ box, both inner and outer are included, this is the correct type for bracelet watches with the removable holder.

If you want exclusivity in a vintage timepiece then this is it. You will be unlikely to see anybody else wearing a similar example.
