VINTAGE OMEGA 1914 FIRST WORLD WAR ‘WRISTLET’ WATCH

These unusual watches became popular just prior to WWI, before wristwatches became widely available.

This one uses a very small gunmetal cased Omega pocket watch housed in a specially made ‘wristlet’ protective holder and strap. Very unusually fitted with an integral metal ‘Shrapnel-guard’. Measuring 42mm in diameter (the top of leather cover) and 33mm in diameter not including the crown with the shrapnel guard fitted.

Totally original condition and undoubtedly bought all together at the same jeweller or gentlemen’s outfitters.

These were a fiddle to wind and set within the holder and this was usually done with the watch removed.

Unfortunately there was little else available for the soldier, other than a Pocket-watch in his pocket before the mass introduction of wristwatches, so these Wristlets became very popular. This particular one is a beauty.

Very discrete and fits close to the wrist, the winding crown fitting snugly into the leather holder.

The watch currently runs a little slow so would need regulating should you wish. However, I would say that this particular example is a little too old and delicate to be used on the wrist, so we decided to leave it in the condition that we purchased it and not mess with it in any respect.

A rare and unusual Omega undoubtedly with a story to tell, very few remaining in this condition.
