BRITISH ARMY ISSUED FIRST WORLD WAR STERLING SILVER TRENCH-WATCH PORCELAIN ENAMEL DIAL

British army issued first world war sterling silver trench-watch porcelain enamel dial.

This very cool gentlemen’s wrist-watch is is amazingly just over one hundred years old and still works perfectly.

Manufactured sometime during WW1, this would most likely have been issued to an officer or senior NCO.

Issued and thus marked as issued wrist-watches are very rare to find from this period. Most so-called trench-watches were not military issue, merely bought privately as they were available to buy in any jewellers.

The example that we see has the British Army broad arrow issue stamp to the back, denoting that is is a genuine military watch.

Manufactured from Sterling Silver, with Swiss Silver hallmarks inside the back.

The wonderful porcelain enamel dial, perfect in every way apart from a little of the radium filling of the figures, which is very unusual as they are almost always cracked or chipped. The heavy radium filled luminous Arabic figures and cathedral hands point to this almost certainly being made for military use.

Measuring 33mm across the bezel, not including the crown and 39mm tip-to-tip.

The very nice quality 15 jewel movement is in good order and runs well, winding and setting as it should and the winding crown is the original ‘onion’ type.

Fitted with a genuine period new-old-stock leather strap, this watch is still very wearable even today and in the right hands has another one hundred years of life left in it.
