1960’s MULCO ESCAFANDRA SUPER-COMPRESSOR STAINLESS-STEEL DIVERS WATCH
960’s Mulco Escafandra super-compressor stainless-steel divers watch.
This is a scarce professional divers wrist-watch, the Mulco ‘Escafandra’ super-compressor. Manufactured in the mid 1960’s, the all stainless-steel case uses the super-compressor type case back, which was designed to actually compress the back tighter to the case the deeper the diver descended. Very ingenious and only a handful of watches over the years have used this system, all having the ‘super-compressor’ trade mark inside the case back.
The inner rotating bezel with 60 minute scale is adjustable with the second crown at 2 o’clock, with winding and setting with the crown below at 4 o’clock.
This example is in wonderful condition considering that almost all of these were bought for professional diving use and as such the ones which have survived are usually in very poor condition.
With an excellent original silvered dial, with applied ‘Mulco -Escafandra’ signature and tiny ‘Swiss’ just below 6 o’clock. The luminous filled figures and baton markers match the hands perfectly, though all have long lost their luminosity.
The inner rotating bezel is unmarked and rotates perfectly as it should. The main case is in fine condition, though the case back has some scratches and dinks, probably from the metal strap rubbing over the years. All of information engraved on the back is still perfectly legible though.
The movement is a self-winding example with calendar and is running very well, keeping quite reasonable time also.
The correct period ’Milanese’ bracelet with deployant clasp looks fabulous and is very, very comfortable to wear. the watch, as you would expect looks absolutely stunning on the wrist. these watches are now highly sought after, especially in this fine condition.
