1931 ROLEX 9KT GOLD CUSHION OYSTER PORCELAIN ENAMEL DIAL & PRISINE ‘AS NEW’ MOVEMENT
1931 Gentlemen’s 9ct rose gold Rolex cushion Oyster with porcelain enamel dial & pristine ‘as-new’ movement.
This fabulous Rolex was manufactured for the British market in 1931 and is everything that you would could wish for in an early oyster.
The 9ct gold case measures 32mm across the bezel not including the crown and 38mm lug to lug.
The 9ct. gold hallmarks for Glasgow confirm the year of manufacture to be 1931. The serrated bezel is in excellent condition with no noticeable signs of wear and the wire strap lugs are also very good and strong with no noticeable wear. Both of the original metal case back/bezel gaskets are still present which is highly unusual to find and there is also an additional 9kt .375 hallmark on the wire strap lug.
The original crown is in perfect order and screws down properly as it should. The outer back very clearly serial numbered ‘28541’ with an additional number ‘678’ above. An early model number possibly ? The case is in superb condition with no dents, dings or visible scratches and just a little very fine scratching to the back from gentle wear over the years. There is no wear at all to the serrations on the back and it has never been attacked with the incorrect removal tool, which most have been over the years.
The porcelain enamel dial is beautiful, signed ‘Rolex Oyster – Ultra Prima’ with ‘Swiss Made’ below the six.
The very unusually styled blued steel hands are in good order, with no rust at all.
This is an early model, before the introduction of the inner dust cover (the later models which should have a dust cover are easily recognisable as the movement holding rings are made from plain brass and not plated as in this early model).
The back easily and smoothly unscrews to reveals the ten and a half ligne hunter movement, which is in unbelievable condition, virtually as it left the factory ninety years ago. Timed to six positions and working perfectly, keeping quite reasonable time also. There is no evidence of rust or previous amateur repairs and the plates shine like no other early oyster that i have encountered.
The sewn-on leather strap, though a little short, is in good condition, still with many years of life left in it. Quite possibly the original, but if not it has been on the watch for a very, very long time and has a nice original buckle marked ‘rolled-gold’. Once on the wrist the watch looks absolutely fabulous as nice ones always do. A very rare find in this condition and quite possibly the best one that you will ever see.
